On July 30, 2009, the Nobel Prize laureate in Physics, professor Douglas D. Osheroff, is invited to visit the High School Affiliated to Xi'an Jiaotong University. Professor Douglas D. Osheroff makes a lecture of popular science entitled "My story of scientific discovery," and a cordial dialogue with students. Professor Wang Jianhua , the chairman of Xi'an Jiaotong University Board, Mr. Lu Mingkai, the deputy director of Shaanxi Porvincial education department, Mr. Wang Pianle, who is in charge of the youth section of the Association for Science and Technology Department of Shaanxi Province, Mr, Qi Guanshe, UNESCO director of Shaanxi Province, Mr. Li Xiabin, UNESCO director of Xi’an City, Ms. Tang Weihua, Deputy Secretary for Education of Beilin District attend the lecture. This is the first time that the Nobel laureate and Chinese students have exchanged ideas at the "Zero”distance in the secodnary education level in Shaanxi Porvince. Many alumni of Hiddle School Affiliated to Xi’an Jiaotong University come from all over the country to attend the meeting.
Ms. Wang Peidong, the Head of High School Affiliated to Xi’an Jiaotong University presides over the lecture. Ms. Wang Peidong said that over the years, professor Douglas D. Professor Douglas D. Osheroff 's report "My story of scientific discovery," started from his own experience of life and the spirit of hard struggle deeply attracted students. He talked about his experience from his childhood story to the impact of secondary school teachers, from the electromagnetic waves to the Big Bang, from the laboratory to the superfluid of helium-three at the absolute zero.
His broad knowledge, his diligent study, his serious attitude of humility, and his simple and sincere style infected students. From time to time, the students burst into warm applauses. At the next interactive process and the afternoon seminar, students of the High School Affiliated to Xi’an Jiaotong University use fluent English to ask questions in study, research, life and the other various aspects. On July 31, he will make another lecture about " what happenes under the condition of absolute zero?” and have a seminar with the teachers of the High School Affiliated to Xi’an Jiaotong University.
